Jailbreak 3.0 with RedSn0w!

redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). Currently it is available for Windows and Mac OS X (there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC, please use an Intel Mac until we have this problem resolved).

REDSN0W PROVIDES SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY TO QUICKPWN.

If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).

This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).
To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

Unlock vs. Jailbreak

I've come upon a lot of posts on a lot of different sites asking about "unlocking" and "jailbreaking" and a lot of people are confusing the two terms. So here is a brief explanation that should clear things up.

Unlocking your iPhone is done so that you may use any SIM Card from any service provider on a GSM network, truly making it a world phone. iPhones typically are "locked" to a specific network by the service provider you buy your iPhone from. To unlock your iPhone, the iPhone Dev-Team have a program called "Yellowsn0w" To find info on this and instructions on how to unlock go here: http://yellowsn0w.com/

Jailbreaking your iPhone frees it so that 3rd party apps, games, themes etc... can be used on your iPhone. This will allow personal customization and use outside of the restrictions Apple has put in place. Thus, an iPhone "Jailbreak". Instructions on how to Jailbreak are posted in the Blog Archive under "How to Jailbreak your iPhone 3G 2.2" posted on Tuesday, January 27, 2009. If you have Firmware 2.2.1 then go to the post in the Blog Archive under "**UPDATE** 2.2.1 Firmware Jailbreak" posted on Friday, January 30, 2009.

How To Jailbreak NEW 2.2.1 Firmware For iPhone,iPhone 3G & iPod Touch 1st Gen

How to Jailbreak your iPhone 3G 2.2

These step by step instructions will assist you in Jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod Touch. It is very easy and does not take long to do. These instructions are to be used at your own risk. If at any time you want to reverse this, just click restore via iTunes.

****Note---> If you are running on firmware 2.2.1 DO NOT USE THESE INSTRUCTIONS!!! Please refer to the post in this Blog on Friday, January 30, 2009 titled: **UPDATE** 2.2.1 Firmware Jailbreak. If you are 2.2 or prior, you can use these instructions!

Step 1

Step 2

Connect your powered on iPhone / iPod Touch to your PC

Step 3

Launch iTunes

Step 4

Make sure you have the latest iPhone Firmware. At the time this is being posted, that would be 2.2

Step 5

Leaving iTunes on, launch QuickPwn

Step 6

Follow the QuickPwn instrcutions (if you make a mistake you can go back and do it again) There is timing involved in holding either the home or power buttons alone or at the same time for a small amount of time, so be prepared.

Step 7

Make sure you select Cydia and Installer to be added to your device Apps. You will need these for later.

Step 8

Power cycle your device and you are done!
